Why your environment matters for your development

When a flower doesn't bloom, you fix the environment in which it grows, not the flower.

Alexander den Heijer

I love this quote and I question it.

The environment we are in matters very much. If we are lucky or able to be in environments which suit and support us, we will flourish and bloom.

Beneficial environments can mean something different for different individuals.

Changing soils can give new nutrients to the flower. The same is true for us. Our needs change during our lifespan. Therefore it can be crucial to change our environment.

Now, let’s change perspectives. If I came up with a quote to prove the opposite, I would say:

It is those flowers which adapt best to their environment that survive the longest.

It is great to strive for authenticity.

It is a privilege to be in an environment that matches our personality.

However, isn’t it those flowers which adapt best to their (changing) environment that ensure their own survival?

So, yes, we can and should strive for both extremes:

Dare to choose an environment which suits you best.

AND

Adapt to the environment and the changing life circumstances you are in to ensure that you will be well prepared for the future.

I'm convinced that this approach helps your general life satisfaction.

Take action where you can and shape your life. Accept what you cannot influence and find your peace with it.
