Why Self-Responsible Behavior Matters

Dear employees,

It is so old school to only focus on your direct supervisor or to think that "you must only act on your supervisor’s requirements".

"I only do as my supervisor says!", is a statement I have heard in various situations and which I often find difficult.

First of all, we are all self-responsible beings.

We are all adults.

The better we manage ourselves self-responsibly, the more successful we will be at work.

Except if in onboarding phase, we should not expect and wait to be told what to do.

We get paid for our contribution to the organization.

"But I’m not a manager!", is another statement which is used to avoid self-responsible behavior and staying in one’s comfort zone. No matter our position - it is about mindset whether we choose to think critically, want to improve our jobs or work environments, and dare to speak up.

Today’s organizations often call for flexibility and agility.

In many jobs, we have several people and departments to connect with.

The better we connect, the more successful we will work.

It is often a requirement to be open and willing to work in different and changing settings.

We will report or align on project A with other people than on topic B.

Supervisors serve as a guidance or for sparring. Supervisors ensure that we all head into the same direction, but it is more about alignment and partnership than about "you do as I say".

I call for self-responsibility.

I call for proactivity.

I call for individual contribution.

By choosing this mindset, we automatically give meaning to our lives.

Yours,

Agnes

PS: Of course, there are also weak or old-school leaders and it‘s always a two-way approach, but before blaming any leader, reflect on what you can do yourself.
