Why Actively Seeking Feedback Enhances Your Professional Growth

There is a difference between being open for feedback and actively asking for feedback.

And you are never too old or too senior to ask for feedback.

Even a 60-year old CEO can ask a young talent what he or she would do differently if they were in his shoes. And receive new insights or different perspectives.

If you actively ask for feedback, you choose the uncomfortable way, because you risk getting an answer that challenges your self-perception. However, actively seeking to understand other perspectives will always help you grow and develop quicker.

For leaders:

When an employee seeks feedback it is oftentimes easy to give some advice. Your advice. You dump your perspective on him.

Whereas, if you start by taking his perspective and try to find out how he thinks and why he thinks that way, you can help him find his preferred solution to meet your expectations and vision. This approach will be more sustainable.

The employee will reflect with your help instead of just copying your way of doing things. Active reflection instead of passive copying.
