I get to meet employees, especially young and ambitious employees, who get frustrated with their employers for what I would call a talent development expectation.
My employer does not care (enough) about me.
If they did, they would offer me great programs and wouldn’t wait for me to ask.
They would spend more money on me.
They would ask me more often what I need.
While I respect this view and have experienced such feelings myself, I do not agree with this attitude any longer. It’s a one-size-fits-all mindset. It’s a taker mindset. It’s a I-let-others-decide-what’s-best-for-me mindset.
It is effective and maybe even cost saving, if an employer offers certain trainings as a standard. It is especially beneficial, if those trainings are well chosen and adapted over the years.
However, as life is diverse and as each career needs different components to develop well, I would always recommend an individual approach - led by the employee.
